ACS20220516EN - Racism Online in Canada

The New York teenager that murdered 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket on Saturday afternoon has been called a “straight-up racially motivated hate crime” In the aftermath of the shooting, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called out social media for enabling the gunman to be heavily influenced by hatred on line. She added that: “the social media platforms that profit from their existence need to be responsible for monitoring... they can in a sense become an accomplice, if not legally but morally.” Racism and hate on line is pervasive and youth in particular are frequently exposed to its manifestation. A Leger survey for the Association for Canadian Studies conducted via web panel during the week of April 25th 2022 reveals that millions of Canadians report ‘often’ seeing racism and prejudice on line and a majority of respondents under the age of 35 ‘often and sometimes’ see racism and prejudice on line directed at immigrants (55%) and a near majority (48%) say they see racism and prejudice on line directed at Black persons. Some 1967 persons were surveyed by Leger for the ACS which included an oversample of 543 immigrants.

Beyond 2020: Renewing Canada’s Commitment to Immigration - Volume 2

The 2020 edition of the conference promised to be bigger than ever, with more than 1,000 participants registered and over 100 workshops and roundtables scheduled. Along with the plenaries, these breakout sessions are one of the great attractions of the Metropolis format, allowing conference participants to form partnerships across sectors and exchange in smaller settings on cutting-edge research and innovative pilot projects, throughout the three-day event. A small selection of the scheduled presentations is being shared here in this two-volume E-book.

Economic, Social and Health Impacts of the Pandemic on Vulnerable Groups in the United-States, Canada and Mexico

Despite numerous declarations that the coronavirus pandemic is finally “over”, illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths continue. In early June of 2023, the USA was reporting 103,436,829 cases of COVID-19, with 1,131,439 deaths in the United States¹ (WHO, 2023). In Canada, the government reported a total case count of 4,684,456 and 52,751 deaths as of June 2023 (Government of Canada, 2023). In Mexico, the number of lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 is 7,621,062 (WHO, 2023b), though we believe this is a significant undercount (see Latapi and Cruz, 2023).
