Webinar – Canadian Identities and the Nation of Minorities

June 27 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Whether Canada can be seen as a “nation of minorities” is increasingly pertinent amidst its rapidly
shifting demographics. In this webinar, Jack Jedwab, President and CEO of the Metropolis Institute and
the Association for Canadian Studies will present the outcomes of a national survey exploring how
Canadians perceive their identities when unprompted– Do they see themselves as part of a majority, a
minority, or both? How do Canadians weigh the importance of their identities, or rank them in order of
personal importance? In debates around belonging some analysts contend that our identities are in
competition while other analysts maintain that they are cumulative- that is to say, they are the sum of a
number of parts.  The results point to a far more complex pattern of identification, especially among
younger Canadians, shedding light on the relative importance they assign to identities. Join us on June
27th for an insightful exploration on this topic.
